AWS re: Invent 2024

AWS re:Invent 2024, a large-scale annual event, drew approximately 60,000 attendees to Las Vegas. Holding nearly 2,000 sessions, AI was a prominent theme, with numerous companies showcasing AI-driven technologies and services.

As a Platinum Sponsor, Fujitsu participated through presentations and a booth exhibit. The company highlighted its expanded collaboration agreement with AWS (announced in late November, extending to all industries) and its AI-powered services, attracting significant attention.

The Road to "3X"

A Fujitsu session, "Accelerate Your 'Road to 3X' with Fujitsu’s AI-driven Modernization," featured Flemming Dan Møller and Ron Commandeur from Fujitsu's Modernization Knowledge Center. "3X" represents the three transformations Fujitsu aims to achieve through modernization: Digital Transformation (DX), Sustainability Transformation (SX), and Green Transformation (GX).

Møller outlined Fujitsu's strategy for achieving 3X, emphasizing a balance between technological advancement, sustainability, and social responsibility. He defined value creation as generating positive impacts for customers, society, and the environment, leading to business growth and success. He stressed the importance of collaborative efforts, emphasizing the need for cooperation among businesses, customers, employees, partners, and other stakeholders.

Commandeur highlighted the long-standing Fujitsu-AWS partnership, dating back to 2012. He explained the gradual expansion of their collaboration across various industries, culminating in a 2024 partnership focused on modernization. He emphasized the critical need for modernization, given the challenges many businesses face with legacy systems. These systems often present significant risks and costs, potentially jeopardizing future competitiveness. Commandeur noted the difficulties in migrating applications developed years ago to the cloud, highlighting the essential role of modernization. Fujitsu has established a global portfolio of modernization-focused services, emphasizing a deep understanding of clients' technology landscapes and tailored support.

Fujitsu has strengthened its consulting services to guide clients through the modernization process, proposing optimal methods and procedures. The company leverages AWS Blu Age to extract code from mainframes, utilizing its source code analysis and conversion capabilities to rewrite code in Java. Commandeur emphasized that AWS Blu Age is an end-to-end tool supporting migration from legacy to modern environments, assisting with assessment, migration, conversion, and ongoing application development and enhancement. This aligns perfectly with Fujitsu's approach of providing end-to-end consulting and transformation services.

A Case Study: Takashimaya's Modernization Success

The session featured a case study of Takashimaya, a major department store, highlighting the successful modernization of its systems—developed 20 to 30 years prior—using AWS Blu Age. The project faced challenges due to missing or incomplete documentation and the unavailability of individuals with knowledge of the original systems. AWS Blu Age's AI capabilities proved invaluable, generating missing documentation and creating test cases. AI also significantly reduced the time required for documentation and source code testing. Fujitsu aims to further integrate AI into its consulting services and assessments, optimizing and managing migrated systems.

Commandeur concluded by emphasizing that cloud migration is just the beginning. Applications require continuous updates to meet evolving business needs. He highlighted the transformative role of technologies like AI and the increasing importance of sustainability and social responsibility. Fujitsu integrates these elements into its Fujitsu Uvance business model, aiming to solve social challenges by merging business and technology.
